Everything you need to know about weather for Our Program

Rain on a glass window with two colorful autumn leaves pressed against the glass, one red and one yellow, with a blurry autumn landscape in the background.

What Weather Means for Our Program

We operate outdoors year-round in Golden Gate Park

Light rain, wind, cool temps, and fog are all normal parts of our routine

Only extreme conditions trigger schedule changes

Why Weather Learning Matters

Builds resilience & confidence

Helps children understand natural cycles

Supports sensory + motor development

Encourages problem-solving outdoors

What We Do in Bad Weather

In severe weather, the Director chooses the safest option for the day:

Option 1: Cal Academy

If conditions are too unsafe to stay outdoors, we relocate to the California Academy of Sciences and spend the day indoors.

Option 2: Park Shelter Areas

If it’s rainy but still safe, we move to our designated dry outdoor shelters (like the tunnels near the Polo Field). This gives children access to both covered areas and open nature, keeping belongings dry while allowing safe play.

What Happens if Weather Gets Bad Midday?

If conditions change while we’re already in the park, we immediately move to a sheltered, safer area of Golden Gate Park. We adjust activities, keep children warm and dry, and continue the day as normal. If weather becomes unsafe (high winds, lightning, or hazardous air quality), we contact families right away with clear instructions for early pickup.
